The Faith-Wisdom / Fear-Folly Paradigm

The whole of the typical spiritual life may be boiled down to a continuum between faith and wisdom, and another competing continuum - fear and folly. The higher continuum is embellished of the Spirit; the lower, of the flesh. These two spiritual continuums of living are, of course, highly interactive with each other, and they're also highly dynamic as they ebb and flow through life.
Imagine these two continua as lines spanning both good and evil as they're experienced or felt by us spiritually. One we desire, the other we flee from.
Before we get into a study of these two continua, we need to understand a spiritual paradox.
A SPIRITUAL PARADOX
The goal of faith is to grow in strength to rely on God - a thing contingent upon weakness - and to realise, also, steady growth in wisdom.
Yet the experience and outcomes of faith and wisdom - as seen by the Faith-Wisdom Continua - seem diametrically opposed. One we draw on to get us through trials. The other we want to sustain - the place of Wisdom is the panacea of all volitional humanity.
The paradox becomes telling as we consider the vast disparity between difficulty at one end and comfort at the other. But both are spiritually disposed.
Likewise, fear is the activator of faith or anxiety; we choose for one or the other. Folly is a different 'animal' altogether; it has been tripped up - as a consequence - of poor decisions, usually based in a flawed morality.
Faith and fear are less to do with our will as they attend, at times vicariously, through circumstances; yet, what we do with them is due our will entirely. Wisdom and folly, conversely, are highly contingent in our will - we decide; we're consequently found wise or foolish by these choices.
THE FAITH-WISDOM CONTINUUM
This Faith-Wisdom Continuum is where we always want to be as believing persons.
We experience peace and joy here, whether via a vindicated faith in our leaning on God in difficulty, or through our enjoyment of blessed consequences for wise living. Wisdom is its own reward.
Faith is required at one end, in weakness. Wisdom is the product at the other end of, usually by virtue of long held faith.
The faithful eventually 'arrive' (however fleetingly it seems) at wisdom. Faith is the spiritual recipe for cooking the meal called Wisdom; one is the cause, the other, an effect.
But, in another paradox, wisdom is not an ultimate destination in itself - not in this life. We never truly 'arrive' - hell's trick is the pride to believe we have or we can.
But these are also polar opposites - by virtue of our seasonal positions in life. We can neither afford to take times of relative comfort for granted, nor blame God for difficult moments.
Sometimes we're blessed with growth spurts resplendent in the requirement for faith; other times we're blessed with a relative 'dry time' with no major upsets; smooth sailing emotionally. Blessing, here, is characterised as wisdom.
THE FEAR-FOLLY CONTINUUM
As fear juxtaposes faith, so does folly, wisdom.
We straddle this continuum at our avoidance. None of us wants to be fearful, and folly we know to result in embarrassment and shame; of itself presenting good reason to fear.
Fear presents that we might express faith to overcome the fear.
Similarly, folly is the opportunity to grow in wisdom - the later expression of it, through learning. It's only when we continue to straddle this continuum - not climbing to a higher tightrope - that major issues persist and fester further, and plunge down the sinkhole do we.
WALKING THE HIGH TIGHTROPE
Could the overall goal of the spiritual life be to simply run - in a balanced fashion - along the high tightrope - on the Faith-Wisdom Continuum, repelling or countering the lower one - yes, by faith and wisdom?
Given an affirmative answer to this question, we need then accept that difficulties will inevitably intersperse times of comfort. But we have tools for coping with both fear and folly: faith and wisdom.

Platonic Fullerene Chemistry, The Romantic Era and The Age of Enlightenment

The Romantic Era during the Age of Enlightenment was about a long desperate battle to immortalise the profound emotional concept of the ancient Greek ideals about Wisdom through Beauty. The Romanticists were trying to prevent an age of emotional despair, engendered by what William Blake called the Satanic Mills of the Industrial Age, with its scientific rationalism of nature. The artist William Blake, the poets William Wordsworth and John Keats, were among those who challenged the theories of such people as Leonardo da Vinci, Rene Descartes and Sir Isaac Newton, for their complicity in helping to bring about the era governed by a mechanical description of the universe.
Blake's satanic times have not changed. On the 28th of May 2011, almost one third of the population of the picturesque Australian township of Murwillumbah, nestled in the scenic World Heritage listed Tweed Valley of Northern New South Wales, marched in protest against mining permits issued by the Government related to the drilling for coal seam gas in their shire. Nearby, just over the border into the state of Queensland, vast areas of fertile land had been laid waste by authorised gas drilling procedures. The water table had been so badly polluted that drinking water from taps could be ignited to produce flames giving off carcinogenic gases. Land holders had learned to their horror that they only owned a few inches of their top soils and were powerless to prevent legalised acts bringing about great emotional and financial despair.
The much loved poem by John Keats, Ode to the Nightingale, was a desperate cry that, intuition, creative imagination and emotional feeling were essential aspects of reality, but his attacks upon Sir Isaac Newton for ignoring this were, strangely enough, unfounded. Sir Isaac Newton had good reason not to publish such sentiments. He lived in the same century in which the scientist Giordano Bruno had been burned alive in Rome for teaching about the them at Oxford university. However, during the 20th Century, Isaac Newton's unpublished Heresy Papers were discovered, which "proclaimed Newton's conviction that mechanical science had to be completed by a more profound natural philosophy which probed the active principles behind particles in motion". This was published on the 30th of November, 1989 by the journal Nature, Volume 342, within a paper entitled, Alchemy of Matter and Mind, written by Richard Gregory, Emeritus Professor of Neurophysiology at the University of Bristol.
The Molecule of Emotion was discovered in 1972 by Dr Candace Pert revealing secrets of life that are now emerging from research into the Platonic Fullerene Chemistry at the University of Florence. Professor Paolo Manzelli and Professor Massimo Pregnalato shared the Georgio Napolitano Medal, which was awarded to them on behalf of the Republic of Italy for their quantum biological discoveries. Their work was found compatible with electromagnetic functioning associated with cerebral creative thinking discovered by Texas University's Dr Richard Merrick. He derived functions of creative thought from the Platonic concept of the 'Music of the Spheres' and published this in his book titled INTERFERENCE. It is interesting that from a Humanities viewpoint, the recent book HARMONY by Prince Charles is also based upon the same Platonic concepts.
The Romanticists have been proven to have been correctly inspired by life-energy forces in nature. Prince Charles was correct when he fused ancient Greek and Egyptian life science concepts of artistic creativity with a new way to look at science. The citizens of Murillumbah will surely be interested to learn that Western Jurisprudence Law, condoning global economic rationalism, has been based upon unethical assumptions. This law for perpetual economic growth, based incorrectly upon Kantian Aesthetics instead of Kant's electromagnetic God like perpetual ethic, is now held in contempt by both the upgraded Newtonian Sciences and the Humanities belonging to the great Romanticists. Sir Issac Newton's active principles behind particles in motion belong in direct association with both the Music of The Spheres logic as well as to the functioning of Dr Pert's Molecule of Emotion.

Atheists Going Around In Circles

Richard Dawkins, among other atheists attempts to use an informal argument based on the principle of mathematical induction to show that science will someday manage to answer all questions leaving no room for God in the universe. The principle of mathematical induction is a rigorous way of showing that a hypothesis Ht holds true at all possible times t. Such an argument takes the following steps:
  • Show that the hypothesis holds at time t = 1. ie. H1 is true.
  • Assume the hypothesis holds Ht holds true at time t. This obviously holds for some t since it was previously shown for t = 1.
  • Show, using the previous assumption, that the hypothesis Ht+1 holds true at time t+1.
Such a mathematical construct seems reasonable since it proves the hypothesis to be true not only at time t = 1, but also at time t + 1 = 2. Obviously then the hypothesis holds true at time t = 2 and hence at time t + 1 = 3. And so the argument continues showing that the hypothesis holds true at all possible times t = 1, 2,... Dawkins uses this argument with the hypothesis set that, for any given time, science currently addresses more physical phenomena previously attributed to God than at any time before. The principal of mathematical induction is then applied to see that this trend will continue until such a time that there exists no more unexplained phenomena and hence, no reason to assume God's existence.
It is easily seen that such an argument contains, hidden deep within, a series of logic errors which, when brought to light, show Dawkins' so called "proof" by mathematical induction to be demonstrably and transparently fallacious. Firstly, it is obvious from the sequential nature of the principle of mathematical induction that it assumes scientific determinism to hold true. That is, it assumes that the universe has always behaved in a consistent fashion will and always continue to do so. Furthermore, scientific determinism assumes that the state of the universe at a given time can always be predicted given enough information at a previous point in time. The reader will note that such an assumption has, embedded within it, a further assumption that God does not exist since it does not allow in any way for interference with the interaction of the universe beyond the scope of the laws of nature. Hence, it can now be seen that, hidden layers deep, within Dawkins' argument against the existence of God there is an assumption that God does not exist, which leads to a circular argument and and easy disproof with Godels theorem.
Put more simply, it is simply preposterous to prove the non-existence of God by first assuming that God does not exist. Indeed, if such an argument were true one could prove in an entirely similar way that, since God's existence has not yet been disproven, the hypothesis set arguing that there are currently more counter-arguments to God refuting hypotheses than at any time before, under mathematical induction, shows that eventually all God refuting hypotheses can be assumed false. Hence, Dawkins must surely be forced to concede that, under his assumptions, there exists no hypothesis which can possibly refute the existence of God. Of course this argument is equally flawed to Dawkins' original argument, and hence not applicable to the questions at hand, however it does serve to demonstrate the nature of the circular arguments which arise from Dawkins' arguments.

A Flatland Motivated View Of Determinism

One of the greatest questions in philosophy is that of determinism. Is everything in our world pre-determined? Is our universe simply a collection of giant gears and levers which continue to turn and entirely determine the future? This may be an impossible question to consider, as I will illustrate using Flatland.
For the benefit of the reader who is unfamiliar with flatland, I digress momentarily. Flatland -- A Romance In Many Dimensions is set in a two dimensional world, which is inhabited by simple polygons. These polygons possess a given number of sides based on their importance in society. For example, women exist as a line segment and are the lowest beings in society, whereas priests -- always male -- are circles -- an infinite sided polygon. The main "character" (a humble square) has a series of dreams and visions, in which worlds of 0, 1 and 3 dimensions are revealed to him. After observing "spaceland" the mundane two dimensional world is no longer enough for him. He wants more!
I, the author, too want more. What is the fourth spacial dimension really like. One can construct simple analogies by extending two dimensions to the third, however this does very little to give one a fourth dimension impression.
I now return to the main focus of this article -- determinism as inspired by Flatland. Consider this two dimensional Flatland, and its inhabitants. Pretend they have been squabbling for years, and are divided by this fundamental philosophical question. One side believe that everything is determined, whereas the other side argue "NO! I know I have free will. Furthermore, I know for a fact that the universe is not deterministic -- I saw a priest appear in my house just the other day. He just appeared there... materialised out of nothing! Whats more, he grew bigger and bigger, until suddenly he started to shrink again, and finally disappeared" Indeed, for a body to suddenly appear in your lounge room at random does seem to be rather conclusive evidence against scientific determinism. We here in Spaceland, however, observed the very incident to which the Flatlanders are referring. We know in fact that the "priest" which the Flatlanders observed was not a priest at all. It was a sphere (bearing in mind that Flatland priests are circles) passing through the surface of Flatland! Obviously, to the Spacelanders, it was entirely predictable that the spheres projection on Flatland would be a circle. It was predictable that as the sphere passed through the surface of Flatland the circle would expand until Flatland passed the spheres diameter, at which point the circle would shrink again. It was even predictable that Flatland's inhabitant would argue over the origins of the "priest" as if it was a random appearance of a divine being.
For now I will leave you with the following thought, and save for next time the implications that this has on free will. Can we sensibly argue against determinism? Even if we concluded that, in our observable dimensions, things were definitely not deterministic how can we refute the possibility of determinism in a higher dimensional space?

The Time Traveler's Note

The grandfather paradox states that a person goes back in time and kills his grandfather before the grandfather has the opportunity to have children. This would mean that the time traveler could not have been born resulting in his paradoxical existence. This paradox is often resolved by a theory in which we assume that we can find ourselves in different universes depending on the actions we take.
To understand this multiple universe theory better we can look at the following simple example. Assume a person is at a crossroads with the option of turning left, turning right, or going straight. After the action has been chosen we find ourselves in one of three different parallel universes. Each universe is the result of the person choosing one of the three aforementioned actions. This theory is naturally intertwined with causality.
Now for the paradox... Consider the following scenario: A person writes a note which records their current geographical location, the date, and the time. The note further says, "if I ever have access to time travel, I will return to the place and time noted here." Now the person waits to see if a copy of themselves appear. If in fact the person does reappear then it can be already concluded that time travel can exist! If the person does not reappear, then it can be concluded that time travel does not exist and hence the note can be destroyed because it will be of no use in a world without time travel! But how will the person know where (or when) to return if they destroyed the note?
This paradox gives some insight into the multiple universe theory through the fact that the paradox only arises if the note is destroyed AFTER the time at which the person is supposed to return. If the note were to be destroyed before the critical point in time, then we cannot conclude anything since it would not be known whether the absence of a time traveler is due to the note's destruction or the fact that time travel does not exist. If, on the other hand, the note is destroyed after the critical point in time then we can (under the multiple universe assumption) conclude that the absence of a time traveler was, in fact, due to the impossibility of time travel. This is because the assumption of multiple universes tells us that there exists a universe in which the person kept the note. The person who destroys the note before the critical point in time is already in a branch of the tree of universes which excludes the time travellers return.

The Psychology of the Hero

As the mythologist Joseph Campbell pointed out, all cultures on the earth have produced hero stories, and many of the same recognizable motifs recur from one to the other. Religions have been built upon them; people have fought and died for them since time immemorial. What's always fascinated me about these myths is the psychology of the hero. What spurs a man or woman to venture out beyond the proscribed boundaries of society in order to face the unknown?
One factor that I've discovered time and again - and this could apply as much to a modern musician that I may be intrigued by as it does to a hero from myth or antiquity - is that such a person is deeply dissatisfied with the status quo, the mental climate of his or her surrounding culture. That lack of satisfaction provides the necessary impetus for the hero to undertake the journey. To put it bluntly, this is probably necessary due to basic human complacency. When life is pleasant we tend to settle into contentment and routine and don't ask - or seek answers to - the deeper questions regarding human existence. It's only when we're in pain that we're motivated to start questioning the greater entities in life. This is why the "suffering artist" is such a recurring phenomenon.
The folklore surrounding the tribal shaman succinctly illustrates the way in which the hero is set apart from normal society and then undertakes the journey to recover something that is missing and sorely needed. Shamans commonly weathered traumatic experiences at least twice in their lives: once in childhood and then again in adolescence. These traumas altered the trajectories of their lives, so that they were denied many of the pleasures and satisfactions enjoyed by their brethren but were also opened up to dimensions of experience that the common man is typically blind to. Essentially, shamans had to be wounded before they could become healers.
The motivation for the hero's journey, then, is primarily a desire to heal one's self. The healing of the tribe, society, or world at large occurs later and is in many cases an afterthought - or even unintentional. The hero's questions cannot be satisfied by the traditional beliefs and rituals surrounding him or her. Such a person must set out in search of personal revelation. That this revelation, once achieved, comes to be perceived as a "boon" to the rest of society suggests that the status quo is never as satisfying as it seems to be and that people are really longing for change even though they may fear it.
A hero can be defined as a person with an inner sense of reality and truth that finds no corresponding echo of itself in the surrounding culture. Lacking that affirmation, which might have brought a sense of belonging, the hero must venture forth alone to find it - and in the process, he or she will discover much that the rest of humanity has been unconsciously longing for.

Speaking With Authority Not Opinion

I do not speak with authority and I have never claimed to, rather I simply present the facts and let them speak for themselves. Only fools say that they speak with authority for in reality there is no such thing only opinion. Below are three examples of those that "speak with authority".
1. It was the "authority" of the Roman Catholic Church that had the Inquisition arrest and put on trial Galileo for demonstrating that the world was round.
2. It was the authority of the State of Tennessee that put John T. Scopes on trial for teaching the science of evolution in the classroom. William Jennings Bryan went out of his way in making harsh accusations at Clarence Darrow to drive home his point that the Bible was correct and in errant on the subject of creation in favor of Adam and Eve against Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, which in the end proved futile.
3. Finally, it was authority on a mass scale when President George W. Bush, Congress, The CIA, and legions of politicians stated the case that Saddam Hussein had "Weapons of Mass Destruction" only to be proved wrong after an extensive and horrific war that proved otherwise.
For the most part people do not grasp the difference between facts and opinions. People become attached to certain ideas and process them in such a way as to interpret them as facts. For example the beauty of a woman, the taste of a fine wine, and the quality of a fine book, though all of these things on first appearance seem to be the subject of opinion and interpretation people will categorize these "tastes" and label them accordingly and follow through by accommodating them with actions and thoughts in terms of facts. Therefore, they come up with the terms "beautiful woman" "excellent wine", and "great book" so as to qualify them as facts: She is a beautiful woman, The wine is excellent, and the book is great.
In many cases people confuse facts with opinions and often take emotion stances to points that do not warrant them. For example; one may say that it was good that the United States and its Allies won WWII, however, that would not be the same opinion of the Germans and their Allies.
Each of us comes to this world with a unique vision and we at best can only offer our views, perspectives, and opinions which never must be confused with facts. It is wise to work together through our different views rather than play the part of the bully and force people into a corner. So in light of all those that boast and lay claim to speaking with authority I say please keep silent and let the facts speak.

The Peak Experience of Adriana's Sculpture

The peak experience induces the recognition that your own powers are far greater than you imagined them. ~Colin Wilson~
Every once in a while, I take a scenic drive along Oatka Trail. With the many twists, it is hard to absorb all its beauty in my effort to stay on the road. On my first drive, about halfway along the Trail, I noticed some statues peering out from the woods. The next time I drove by, they were still there. I never knew quite what to make of them until I read a newspaper story about Jack and Adriana Slutzky and their collection of outdoor sculptures. Intrigued, I promised myself to visit them. I never made it until last week. My only regret was that I didn't go sooner.
Jack greeted Carol and me along with the museum group he had scheduled for a tour that day. He explained that his wife had created all the works we would visit. We could see a few through the trees and had no idea of the extensive collection which waited us.
We learned that Jack and Adriana are both artists and had both taught art. Now Adriana concentrates on sculpture and Jack writes books and paints when he is not excavating, pouring concrete and moving completed works on a scale which reminded me of Easter Island.
Most of Adriana's works embody the experience, joy and challenges of being a woman. Some pieces remind me of Henri Moore and Pablo Picasso. All of them rise from her unique inspiration. She explores the world of relationships in her pieces, working from a feminine perspective, the one she knows best.
Jack morphed from tour guide into art professor, giving us glimpses into Adriana's inspiration and symbolism. We first saw individual works. Further into the tour, installations consisted of more and more pieces. A waterfall, the woods Oatka Creek gave the sculptures a context in nature. During the tour, I found myself deepening from curiosity through meditation, to a sense of awe which stayed with me the rest of the day.
I recalled Abraham Maslow's writings about peak experiences, "Transpersonal and ecstatic states, particularly ones tinged with euphoria, harmonization and interconnectedness." This was definitely such an event for me, one I will always treasure. It helped me make sense of the world, and especially of the women who inhabit it along with us men. My visit left me with an understanding of the lives of those around me, defying expression in words. The images say it all.
The greatest joy I receive while working at an arts council is coming face to face with the creative spirit of the artists I meet. That day's experience brought great joy by allowing me to touch Adriana's spirit.
Life Lab Lessons
  • Do you recall any peak experiences in your life?
  • What did they mean to you?
  • How did they affect your view of yourself and others?
  • Are you ready for them to happen again?
  • In the presence of great art, let yourself feel it rather than just seeing or hearing it.

Employee Retention Secrets From a Rural Housewife

I recently learnt a very important lesson in attrition management. It came from a most unexpected quarter:a middle-aged housewife in a village, tucked away in South India.
My friend and I were helping ourselves to a sumptuous Biriyani treat at her house. We were on a short vacation-exploring the green beauty of the Western Ghats, the mountains dividing South India.
I remarked that she manages to keep her vegetable gardens trim and well maintained. It must be difficult for a lady of her age. She looked as if she was in her sixties.
"0h, I always get the best workers, and they never leave me," she said with a smile.
"How do you manage to keep them with you?" I asked, sniffing the possibility of uncovering a management precept that somehow, Drucker and other Gurus had overlooked. Here was my chance! I could have MY BIG BOOK out. I thanked myself for having read up on the attrition problems faced by the giant MNCs.
However, her answer, was quite unexpected.
"The secret son, is in front of you, on your plate!" She said with a triumphant smile.
I could not believe it. "You feed biriyani to your workers everyday?"
How could she balance out costs and returns?
"No you dummy", she said."I serve them what we make for ourselves. As much as they want"
"Oh, but they are only workers...you are indulging them, aunty." I tried to reason with her.
"On the contrary, I find them extremely reliable, to the point that they will ask my permission to go for work in others' places. I have had instances of absenteeism very rarely, and they take good care of my plants. Thats all I need."
"Wow, that's just great. Now I know how to get 100% attendance at my office."
My enthusiasm, however, drew a concerned look from her.
"I think you are missing the whole point, son" She explained," I do not treat them well to get good returns out of them. It is not a transaction for me. I do it because I love to do it. I like to make them happy."

Social Conditioning and Expression

A notable feature of modern society is the proliferation and various manifestations of art. It is not only a quintessential expression of human creativity and sense of the aesthetic. It is also a reflection the values and ideals of the time and the community as a whole. The problem lies when art or for that matter, any form of human expression, comes in conflict with the values system of the society. For the culture and norms of a community to find continuity and expression social conditioning is employed to instill them into every single individual.
Social conditioning by its nature seeks to enshrine what society believes in and stands for in almost every aspect of the lives of its members. All human undertakings, collective known as the Humanities are supposed to manifest what social conditioning transmits into the psyche and orientation of society. However, due to the dynamic aspect of human expression, most if not all times the arts convey meanings that are not prescribed by the society's ideals. Moreover, there are even cases wherein many forms of creativity are considered as affronts to social values.
Ideas of the ethical, moral, just, decent and acceptable make their way into the minds of the members of society. This in turn dictates perception and what people think. However, this is often misplaced and untrained in many cases. It fails to soundly distinguish between things that must be conditioned out and those that are singled out because they are culturally repulsive. Institutions and groups in American society often attack Pornography as the fundamental catalyst to the erosion of decency. However, these same groups do not find the subtle violence and promotion prejudicial atrocity in cartoons like Tom and Jerry or the adventures of the Looney Tunes. The former is exposed to, by and large, by adults who can sensibly discern what or what they cannot act on in the explicit material. The latter is freely imprinted into the minds of the American youth. These sows the seeds which could like bear fruit in the future in the form of gun violence, contempt for the rule of law and rejection of values.
Society can, in fact, be molded by shaping what and what is not allowed to permeate the consciousness of the people. This should be based in rooting out that which can be genuinely harmful and not just something deemed offensive to a particular point of view. Unfortunately, in the United States the basis for what and what should be conditioned into the people is often skewed and dictated by the moralist sectors of society. This must be wrested from them and be placed in neutral hands.

Ancient Rituals Are Reenacted in Modern Rock Concerts

Mythology, in ancient times, was in many ways the psychic glue that held cultures together. It gave them identity, and endowed their people with a sense of spiritual community. It's hard for any of us who're alive today to really envision what life under a functioning and life-giving mythology was like. The spiritual communion of the West has received some grievous blows, most notably during the Industrial Revolution and in the years since. But our psyches and souls instinctively need - and gravitate towards - the nourishing symbols and archetypes of myth. This is the reason why so many of the motifs of ancient rites find their echo in the rituals (particularly among the young) of the modern day. One prominent example is rock concerts.
The Greek playwrights believed that the greater the suffering depicted onstage within their tragedies, the greater the emotional catharsis their audience would experience. In the modern age, we've long pursued a love affair with tormented artists - gifted and doomed - amongst our painters, poets, writers and musicians. Onstage at a rock concert, the existential struggles of the performer are played out for all to see. And perhaps we unconsciously expect the self-destruction that so often occurs as a culmination. It is the fulfillment of the age-old fate of the tragic hero.
Modern music has revived many of the symbols and story arcs that lay at the heart of ancient rituals. This is especially true of Heavy Metal and its extreme subgenres. Here we often find lyrical content replete with magic, the supernatural, the demonic and the angelic. This can all be seen as an attempt the demarcate the bounds of our reality. How high can man rise - and how far can he fall?
It's interesting to note, too, that loud and aggressive music often attracts boys nowadays during the same period of life that served as the prime initiatory moment in old tribal cultures: adolescence. The raucous sounds of rock's various genres have always served to outrage and alienate the older generations. This, too, bears resemblance to tribal initiations where a young boy would be forcibly separated from his parents (particularly the mother), immersed in the lore and mythology of the tribe, and then reintroduced to the community with a new identity and name. Nowadays, no one comes to abduct the young from the nest, so kids often use music to achieve the same outcome, keeping the older generation bewildered and distanced while they struggle for their own sense of identity.

You Cannot Automate Everything with Computers to Run Human Society and Still Maintain Freedom

As the coordinator for a think tank which happens to operate online, I often find people who are computer savvy, and have skills in the IT sector. They definitely come up with very intriguing ideas to streamline our civilization using software and computers to help improve the efficiency. However, there is a problem with all this, and that is that the folks writing the software, and creating the hardware, perhaps do not have the proper experience in a given industry, or understand the ramifications or law of unintended consequences when proposing ways to fix the economy, government, healthcare system, transportation, or anything else.
Perhaps you've been frustrated when you were forced to fill out a form online or on a computer. You weren't allowed to go to the next question until filled out something in the previous box. Unfortunately what you had to fill out in the box was unacceptable, there were no good choices, or you couldn't answer the question because it wasn't applicable. It's times like that that you realize that the computer systems were set up for a certain type of scenario, rather than someone who has a special case, special need, or a different situation.
One thing I've learned is if you try to develop a system for the most unintelligent person, and make it simple enough for everyone to use, you inevitably run into problems if there are complications. It happens anytime you make a rule, regulation, or law and making rules is pretty much that's what writing software is about. You see, you cannot automate everything with computers to run human civilization and society. And if you try you will inadvertently take away freedom. In other words someone won't be allowed to do something merely because there was a box to fill out, or a form, and therefore they can't.
That's unfortunate because we have laws in our country which are supposed to be set up that; "if it doesn't say you can't, then you automatically can," and in a way by making few rules, we derive freedom while living under the rule of law. Now then, the software programmers and the hardware that runs these computers will not be able to think of everything on their own, until we create true artificially intelligent to run the system and make future changes on its own.
Meanwhile humans who are fallible, and in this case may not understand all the future situations because things change, but also because they have no experience in that particular industry, area of endeavor, or social program, are causing a loss of freedom with each new rule they create to run the new system.
We must be very careful what we automate things not to cut people out of the pattern, or take away the freedoms that we all love. We do this far too often when someone doesn't consider all the potential eventualities in advance, and they come up with some law, rule, or software program which alienates an entire group of people. Or, sometimes just an individual, someone like you. I hope I've made my point.

Platonic-Fullerene Chemistry and Nanopolymer Technology

The science of Platonic Fullerene Chemistry has been reunited the cultures of science and art to re-establish the ancient Platonic Science for Ethical Ends. This means that the concept of Aristotle's ethical science to guide ennobling government can now re-emerge throughout the world. The objective of that ancient science remains exactly the same as it once was. It is science, designed to avoid human extinction. The existence of two separate chemistries, one about the physical material reality and the other about the functioning of Dr Candace Pert's Molecule of Emotion, forms the structure of this human survival science. Both chemistries entangle with each other to describe universal reality. This provides the basis of the ancient Greek political concept of allowing the people to choose between what Buckminster Fuller's called Utopia or Oblivion.
The global slide toward oblivion today is much as it once was in ancient Athens, when the Tyrants plunged the city into impossible debt, threatening such chaotic violence that Solon was appointed to sort out the economic differences in a peaceful manner. He abolished personal debt and interest on loans, as well as making property ownership more accessible to the people. Within ten years Athens became extremely prosperous. His wisdom, on behalf of the people, made contributions toward more democratic concepts in the face of complex greed manipulations by unethical power brokers.
After ten years of growing prosperity the Tyrants again seized control and Athenian power began its path to decline by foreign aggression. Today the same situation has returned to Greece and other nations caught up in the current global economic nightmare, now threatening to destroy the civilisation of the United States of America. It can be considered that stakeholders in global economic rationalism might be able to conceive, to their benefit, a modification of their present economic legal responsiblies, by upgrading them to meet the new medical chemistry guidelines.
During the 20th Century it was common knowledge that our entropic chemistry, governed by the second law of thermodynamics, had correctly stated that it is impossible to construct a perpetual motion machine. However, such concepts can now be reasoned about logically with an understanding about the functioning of the integration of both the new and the old chemistries. Past economic rationalism, however, invented concepts that sought perpetual economic growth for the benefit of human civilisation. TIME Magazine's Century of Science's greatest scientist for 1907 was Maria Montessori, who realised this was in error, referring to the entropic second law as the Greed Energy Law that would only bring about economic collapses and continual warfare.
Working with the Jesuit Priest, Tielhard de Chardin, Montessori postulated the existence of an electromagnetic key to open the 'Golden Gates' to the future. This electromagnetic key was Immanuel Kant's God-like Ethic for perpetual peace on earth, the subject of Hans Christian Oersted's Doctorate in 1799 titled,The Architectonicks of Natural Metaphysics. Oersted envisaged a new electromagnetic biological technology, which, in modern terms, is the quantum biology of the new Platonic Fullerene Chemistry. This makes Faraday's concept of the electric motor a child's toy by comparison. We now know from nanopolymer research, that such an electromagnetic life-science ethic is associated with the functioning of the centriole within the human cell, giving glimpses of a truly supra technology beyond our previous ability to imagine.
It is not necessary to use such technical terminology to demonstrate to the people that modern science and economics has been constructed upon false assumptions that dismissed human feelings as part of its composition. Leonardo da Vinci was not the man of the Renaissance the public has been led to believe. His optics key in his Theory of Knowledge, claiming that the eye was the source of all cognition, was erroneously supported by Rene Descartes and Sir Francis Bacon, pivotal figures of the mechanical era. At the moment of conception the eye does not even exist to guide any evolutionary development at all. Leonardo was unable to envision the liquid crystal optics of the eye of the cell. When the fertilising sperm, driven by a male nano-scale electromagnetic motor, penetrates the liquid crystal optical construction membrane of the female ovum, Dr Carl Callerman's universal purpose is brought into living focus as a balanced Yin-Yang electromagnetic centriole. The optics of the cellular membrane, not the optics of the human eye, holds the key to all knowledge. The centriole is the carrier of universal life-science purpose.
Scientists such as Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff are researching about what can be considered to be crucial properties of the centriole that are associated with the cerebral functioning of micro-tubule polymers. Without a doubt, nano-polymer research is now becoming crucial research for humanity's future. However, Buckminster Fuller's warning about making the choice between Utopia or Oblivion is of paramount importance to the people of the world. Fears about entropic nano-bot technology appear to be well founded. Plato warned about the destructive evil of unformed matter within the physical atom that could emerge from the actions of engineers who knew nothing about spiritual optical engineering principles belonging to the science for ethical ends. Today, the nuclear radiation threat spreading into Japan pales into insignificance to the threat posed by current entropic nanotechnology.
The British Astronomer Royal, Sir Martin Rees, has predicted that uncontrolled nanotechnology research is one of the inevitable human extinction outcomes that is likely to occur this century. In order to comprehend the solution to that dire threat of oblivion, we need to understand the basic relationship between the old familiar chemistry and the new one that is now emerging alongside it. We must free ourselves completely from being governed by an entropic dictatorship that denies that the science of life is linked to the infinite ethical fractal logic of the new chemistry. It is no longer acceptable to considerit heresy that Sir Isaac Newton's conviction, written in his Heresy Papers, that the world-view of a material universe must be completed with a more natural, profound philosophy, a philosophy based upon the same physics principles that upheld the original Platonic Science for Ethical Ends. Newton's infinite world-view can only be upheld by the same fractal logic that was basic to this lost science, and which is also fundamental to Platonic Fullerene Chemistry.
Buckminster Fuller's warning about a science governed by entropic logic was echoed by others such as the Molecular Biologist, Sir C P Snow, the Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Szent-Georgy, and the Max Plank Astrophysicist, Peter Kafka. All of these people warned that the mind-set of Homo Entropicus was following a path to total chaos. This is indeed an entrenched scientific culture, Einstein wrote that the second law of thermodynamics was the Premier Law of All of Science. Einstein's colleague, Sir Arthur Eddington called it the Supreme Metaphysical Law of the Entire Universe. Charles Darwin used it as the basis of his Theory of Evolution, actually citing Thomas Malthus' economic theories, which, in the 18th Century, had become synonymous with the second law of thermodynamics. For Western Moral Jurisprudence Law to attempt to continue to enforce an entropic global economic rationalism upon the global population can be considered to be a recipe for World War III.
In Volume 12 of the collected papers of Bertrand Russell, written in 1902, mention is made of Platonic metaphysics, but Russell lost belief in those ideas, although that particular work is considered to warrant further serious study. His, A Free Man's Worship, published in 1903, was a dedication to Albert Einstein's concept, that all life must be destroyed by the dictates of the second law of thermodynamics, the universal entropy law, and this became Russell's most popular reprinted essay. He wrote that "...the whole temple of man's achievement must be buried beneath the debris of a universe in ruins..." and "... only on the firm foundation of unyielding despair, can the soul's habitation henceforth be safely built." In the light of the new Platonic Fullerene Chemistry, this horrific world-view that has been governing Western science for so many centuries, is no longer acceptable.
We know that various ancient Eastern philosophies were able to associate fractal geometrical logic with human emotional feeling. For example, the ancient Indra Diamond Net Necklace fractal demonstrates emotional concepts that are relevant to Dr Candace Pert's Molecule of Emotion discovered in1972. It is ignorant and offensive to consider such ancient philosophical ideas to have been ancient acts of pagan, barbaric behaviour, as was believed by St Augustine during the 5th Century, following the murder of the mathematician, Hypatia, in 415, who was the custodian of the Great Library of Alexandria.
During the 5th Century, over a thousand years of fractal logic life-science research were burned and dismissed from the mind-set of Western culture, influencing the Western world for another fifteen hundred years. The great genius, Albert Einstein, may have caused Bertrand Russell's inspiration that we must accept a living hell on earth, but Einstein's real greatness was that his protege, David Bohm, and Bohm's colleague, Karl Pribram, managed to break the entropic barrier to give the world a glimpse of the workings of an infinite fractal holographic universe. Einstein can be considered to have been instrumental in making that possible.
The front cover of New Scientist, dated the 26th of June 2010, heralded the Rise of the Quantum Machines. The relevant feature article carried the heading that "The new breed of quantum machines promise to patch a gaping hole into every experiment ever made". The quantum researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Nobel Laureate, Anthony Leggett, considered that although quantum theory is our most successful physics theory to date, it may not continue to describe the physical world perfectly, because there are too many issues that approximate reality.
The quantum theory mentioned in the article emphasises the physical world. The new Platonic Fullerene Chemistry, however, is about quantum biology and its interweaving with the world of quantum mechanics. This permits new models of reality to come into existence that challenge the validity of our understanding of the second law of thermodynamics. One of physics' most famous thought experiments is that of Shrodinger's cat, which can be dead and alive at the same time, an argument designed to demonstrate that quantum theory can be considered to flawed. Many scientists argue otherwise, referring to the property of a single Fullerene carbon-70 molecule being able to go through two separate slits at the same time within Young's double slit experiment. Ideas about parallel universes appear to emerge from such thinking, which although interesting, do not seem to be addressing the serious consequences of maintaining an entropic mind-set.
Due to the serious issue of Fuller's choice between Utopia or Oblivion underlying this article, it has been deemed warranted to make an attempt to present some reasoned argument that might draw public attention to its perceived peril at the hands of the second law. The properties of the Fullerene Carbon-70 is of great interest to the Science-Art Research Centre of Australia, which is closely associated with the development of the New Measurement of Humanity Project at the University of Florence. The Centre has adopted the Mark Robinson model of space-time, which provides a suggested solution to Young's famous double slit experimental paradox and it is therefore considered prudent to mention this as being representative of the new models of space-time that are now emerging in defiance of the second law of thermodynamics
Robinson's model was among such models noted in the text of a quantum biological paper by Huping Hu and Maoxin Wu, titled On Dark Chemistry- What's dark Matter and How Mind Influences Brain Through Proactive Spin. The paper was about how primordial sub atomic spin influences consciousness in defiance of the second law of thermodynamics and was published in NeuroQuantology, Volume 5, issue2, June 2007.
In accord with Plato's dictum that all is geometry, Robinson postulated that a fundamental concept of space-time describes a simple premise. Information within energy creates a unique geometrical structure of time, space and matter, reminiscent of Sir Isaac Newton's 'very subtle spirit' mentioned in his Fundamental Principles of Natural Philosophy. In Robinson's model, a constant acceleration of light upgrades a holographic pattern of space-time reality, compatible to Newton's association of light carrying information related to gravity. Space-time comprises of three phase states, past, present and future as a singular geometric event. Each phase's location is uniquely defined within the time line. This suggests a coherent geometry through space-time, replacing the concept of randomness and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
Nonlocality, the ability of information exchange beyond space-time, is essential to Robinson's model. Each phase of a moment of time communicates within its being, to constantly upgrade its local environmental space-time structure of the universe. Within Young's double slit experiment, this process might play a role to explain paradoxical events. We know from the EPR paradox that information can be in two places at once and we might now associate this with the workings of some intelligent purpose rather that submit to Bertrand Russell's world-view of uncertainty and chaos. Order from chaos can be considered associated with sub-atomic movement evolving through space-time, compatible with both the physics principles upholding the Platonic Science for Ethical Ends and Sir Isaac Newton's complete description of the universe.
Professor Paolo Manzelli and Professor Massimo Pregnolato were awarded the Georgio Napolitano Medal in 2010 on behalf of the Republic of Italy, for their quantum biological development of Platonic Fullerene Chemistry, as part of their New Measurement of Humanity Project, the New Renaissance. Their Age of Quantum Entanglement in science and art allows for an understanding of how the process of chaos simultaneously enacts an auto catalytic event that produces a new ethical, or healthy, order in nature, described as the "Principle of Fertile Evolution".

Golden Touch

Once upon a time there was a rich man named Midas. He had many palaces, many acres of land, a lot of money and many gold bars. Still he was not satisfied with them. He wanted more and more gold. He had a daughter, who was very beautiful. He loved her very much.
One night a fairy wanted to teach him a lesson and appeared before him. The fairy said, "Oh Midas! I want to give a boon to you. You may ask for anything. It'll be granted."
Midas was very happy. He thanked the fairy and said," kindly give me the power by which anything touched by me changes into gold." The fairy smiled and gave him the power. Then the fairy disappeared.
Midas was very happy. He touched all the articles in his palace. Everything changed into gold. "I will be the richest man in the world. Oh, fairy! Thank you very much," said Midas. Then he went to bed.
Next morning he woke up. He wanted to have a bath. When he touched water, it turned into gold. He was shocked. He could not have a bath.
Then he came to the dining table. The servants served delicious dishes before him. When he touched them to eat, everything changed into gold. He could not eat.
At that time, his daughter came there to have her break-fast. When he touched her fondly, she too became a golden statue.
"Oh, God! What is this?" he cried. "I don't like this power of changing everything into gold. I want my daughter back. "
No one answered his prayer. He wept bitterly.
"Oh! I don't like to be the richest man in the world. I am ready to give away all my wealth. Give me back my daughter," Midas cried.
In the evening the fairy appeared before Midas and asked, "Midas! Are you happy now?"
"Oh, fairy! Kindly take away your boon. I don't like to be a rich man. I am ready to be a poor man if my daughter is given back to me," Midas requested.
"Midas! Wealth is not everything. Don't be greedy. I wanted to teach you a lesson. Your daughter will come back and you will lead a normal life," said the fairy and disappeared.
The extraordinary power of Midas vanished. His daughter came to life. Midas was very happy and led a contented life. Then he came to the dining table. The servants served delicious dishes before him. When he touched them to eat, everything changed into gold. He could not eat.

Be Curious About Creativity

Have you ever wondered why humanity is so questioning? What an amazingly curious mind the artist and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci had to make the discoveries that kept his name in the spotlight 500 years after his death. The world would not have the technology to reach others over the internet without curious, creative people sharing knowledge.
We all do need a little support, and sometimes an escape from everyday life, to find the inner artist in this busy world. Getting more conscious about who we are personally takes a little self examination and lot of ongoing assessment. The secret, I feel, is to return to our childhood memories to find what inspired and fulfilled us them.'Curiouser and Curiouser' was what Alice exclaimed in her journey to Wonderland. We may all have something to learn from falling down a well into another way of looking at the world.
I recently had a very interesting group of curious artists gather in my art studio at Tallegalla for a workshop. That curiosity was a largest part of this weekend was very evident. Most had questions that related to their purpose in creating and their ongoing search for answers. Learning how others have researched and discovered can answer the many questions we all have about life...and art is after all life.
My own curiosity has lead to a rather largish library that I continue to add to at such a rate I need three minds to absorb what I want to read. Not only is self education essential, we need to find our tribe and curiosity will lead us to our creative destiny. However remaining motivated can be a hard call at times as creative people can be like boats tossed about in storms of life. There are several versions of a saying attributed to Babatunde Olatunj and I particularly like this version "The clock is running. Make the most of today as time waits for no man. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
It is the mystery of life I find so interesting but it is today that is always going to be the best time to be educating the mind which is powerful and responsive to the best efforts to motivate and enrich us. Every day we can read something new, experiment, explore and best of all research what gives us passion. I found this alone to be the most inspiring of all the tools of creativity.

Robert Oppenheimer and Andrei Sakarov

Two Nuclear Scientists, Robert Oppenheimer and Andrei Sakarov, played leading roles in the development of nuclear bombs (A-Bomb for R.O. and the H-Bomb for A. S.) for their respective governments, and then experienced similar reversals in their views of the wisdom and morality of the nuclear weapons programs in their respective nations.
Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project which developed and built the first Atomic bomb in the mid 1940s, later became a voice of moderation and opposed development of the even more powerful thermonuclear bomb (H-Bomb). He felt that US superiority in stockpiling A-Bombs was sufficient for national defense, but he was opposed by strong voices in and out of government who favored the H-Bomb project; he was eventually discredited, lost his security clearance, and had no further influence on US nuclear arms policy. The US government took the advice of Edward Teller, one of Oppenheimer's scientific colleagues, and proceeded to develop the H-Bomb. Meanwhile (in the 1950s) Oppenheimer's loyalty to the United States was questioned and he was generally discredited as a leading scientist and adviser to the government. His contributions both for defense and as a spokesman for moderation were not given due recognition until much later (1990s) during the time of the Clinton administration.
The leading scientist in the Soviet development of the thermonuclear bomb was Andrei Sakarov, known as the "father of the H-Bomb" in the Soviet Union. After successful above-ground testing of the most powerful nuclear device ever exploded, he also had second thoughts. He criticized the whole arms program of the Soviet Union, argued strongly for bilateral nuclear treaties with the United States, criticized Soviet policies, and the Soviet authorities. In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, but the leaders of the USSR were not pleased. Eventually he was arrested and sentenced to "internal exile." But with the later developments and moderation in the Soviet Union, Sakarov was recognized for his work on behalf of Human Rights. I believe that the American Humanist Association named him "Humanist of Year" in 1980.
It is ironic to note that in each case we have two leading scientists, whose moral, social conscience got them in trouble with the authorities in their respective countries. Each came out as a spokesman for moderation and opposed his respective nation's mad dash into the nuclear arms race. Both paid the price that is often exacted on anyone who raises moral questions about his country's weapons programs and anyone who opposes the military policies of their governments, especially when officials claim that national security hangs in the balance.p

Want to Know the Biggest Secret of All - There Aren't Any

Humans are curious by nature, actually all up-right walking primates tend to be curious, and that shouldn't surprise anyone. Nor should it surprise anyone to learn that any good book publisher that publishes nonfiction books will tell you that the word "secret" in the title of the book will help it sell more copies. There is something that is alluring to the fact that there is a secret, something we don't know about, that makes us all too curious to go and find out. Religions use this tactic to recruit individuals to their flock, and marketers use it to sell products and services.
Still, it's used so often, and there are so few secrets in the information age that the chances of you learning a real secret are slim to none. That is to say, sure you might learn something that you don't know, but it's hardly a secret. And there are many more information outlets to discover the exact same information, usually for free. It's even more so than it ever has been in the past because all of mankind's information and knowledge is now online on the Internet. With billions of people connected to this massive communication system the concept of keeping secrets will someday be a thing of the past.
What I am trying to say is the biggest secret of all; is that there really are no secrets, that is to say no important secrets. Yes there is undiscovered information, and there are some things that humans don't yet know about physics, but I guarantee you someday in the future our artificially intelligent supercomputers, along with our scientists will discover all that information as well. I'm sure you've heard the phrase; Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe. There are no secrets in physics - there are only challenges in the observational abilities, and the limits to the devices that we presently have to do the viewing.
There are no secrets to our world, no one is purposely trying to hide anything of any huge magnitude, just silly little things, that don't amount to a hill of beans anyway. Luckily humans are a curious bunch, and they were to seek out information they do not know. However, with over 7 billion people on the planet now - the chances of anyone secret escaping all of mankind in the past, present, and off into the future is highly unlikely.
Therefore you should always realize that the biggest secret of all is; there aren't any real secrets anymore. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Why You Should Not Submit to Authority

As Americans we believe in freedom and liberty. It's hard for people in other cultures to understand this because they've never experienced true freedom. And there is a famous quote that goes something like this; "if you believe you are free you are and if you are not fee then you aren't." There is a lot of truth to that. Most individuals in other countries are not free, they don't have near the freedoms, and liberties that we have here the United States, still some believe they are free because they've been told they are free by the authorities there.
In the United States we have more freedoms than in most countries, but still one could question, from a philosophical standpoint, if we are really free. You see, every time we go and try to do something there is someone standing in the way making a rule, or regulation, and there are those individuals who rather than produce, go out and enforce the rules, make new rules, or claim that you must follow their lead because they are the authority. However, if we stop and think about it we have to ask who gave them that authority?
The answer is quite simple. You see, if you submit to authority then it is you who are giving them that authority. If you fail to submit to authority, then and only then you can truly be free. Unfortunately, it might be more difficult to get the things you want in life because you have to go through barriers that other people have set up. In many regards this goes back to another philosophical thought regarding free-market capitalism, deregulation, and the right to free contract. Those are very powerful ideas.
Consider if you will all the things you want to do in your life, but you can do them until you do something else, get a license, take ongoing education classes, fill out a form, get a degree, or fulfill some other requirement. Interestingly enough, in our current modern society that encompasses just about everything you'd ever want to do. Now then, I ask is that fair to you? No, it's probably not, however once you submit to authority you have agreed to these rules in advance and all the new rules the authority comes up with even though you don't know what they are before you set out to do something.
Over the years I've found so many folks who attempt to stand in my way, or in the way of other individuals who wish to fulfill a goal, dream, or an enjoyment in life. On one hand we have the right to pursue happiness, but every time we wish to do something there are more and more rules. Over time the rules get to be so out of control, that folks can't do anything, as they have to ask permission to do everything. That's not real freedom.
Beware of folks who are lesser standing in front of you with a badge of authority telling you that you aren't good enough, that there are more requirements, or that you can't do something because they said so. Those are the individuals who are stealing your freedom and liberty, and keeping you from your dreams. If you submit to those people you will never fulfill your true destiny, or know what true freedom is. Indeed I hope you will please consider this and think on it.

I Do Not Submit to the Socialist's Plan for Galactic Domination - Mostly Because It Won't Work

What's that famous line; "Resistance is Futile!" Yes, indeed that is scary stuff, so is the Borg. Nevertheless, consider if you will the type of societal structure that will be needed for a space colony. It might be much different than here on Earth, and the strategies that work here may not work there, at least not right away. For instance, when the Mayflower settlers came over to the new world, they worked together in a communal type society. Perhaps the first space colonies might be communist, or rule themselves by way of socialism.
Remember there will be scarcity, quite a bit of recycling, and everyone must participate, and no one can take anything for granted. Due to issues of fairness, and considerations of what humans believe to be fairness, we may end up with a socialist type strategy for our space colonies. Nevertheless, as a space colonies grow, and more humans span out across the galaxy on habitable planets and moons, there will be less Scarcity, and some sort of the money system.
Some might say that money is the root of all evil, however money is merely a unit of trade, and whether it is physical or electronic, it is a good way of measuring value. There will be trading regardless of whether humans off-planet live as communists, and even if it is not allowed to trade or have money, it will occur anyway. Now then, how do I feel about this being a capitalist, and living in the greatest nation ever created? I don't like the concept of living in a socialist type society, and I am well aware of my history, so the concept doesn't please me.
Nevertheless, I could see how something like this could happen. Further, I do not submit to a socialist plan for galactic domination in advance. I surely want to see how it develops and take a look at it from a personal freedom standpoint. Perhaps in the future personal freedom, liberty, and those things we hold dear here on Earth may not exist exactly as we may hope in the off planet future of human evolution and advancement.
Further, I don't see it as a long-term strategy that will work. Feudalism, socialism, communism has never been the most efficient civilization or society, and those forms have a tough time in enduring over many generations. What I'm saying is that a socialist plan for the galaxy where all human must submit is not a place where I care to live.
Does that make me a pre-advanced technological-age rebel? Well, that's hard to say, because we live in the present period, and this is a comment about the far-off future which we cannot know. Likewise, I will not call you a rebel for agreeing with me, nor a member of the Borg for disagreeing. Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this from a philosophical standpoint and think on it.

Materialist Philosophy Does Not Contradict Itself

Recently a philosophical acquaintance argued that materialists blatantly contradict themselves when they take a materialist view of reality and yet affirm that free, independent action is possible.
The argument which he presented relied on three premises:
1) Materialism affirms that reality in nothing but matter-in-motion.
2) Materialism implies affirmation of determinism, the metaphysical idea that all physical reality is causally determined.
3) Free, independent action requires action free of determinism.
To draw the conclusion:
4) Hence, when materialists affirm that human freedom is possible they contradict themselves. (They affirm that all reality is determined and affirm that some reality (human free action) is not determined.)
The argument fails because it relies on very questionable, if not downright false, premises with regard to (1) 'materialism,' (2) 'determinism,' and (3) 'free action.'
MATERIALISM: Defining "materialism" as the view that the only reality is matter-in-motion is not at all consistent with the materialist philosophy held by scientific materialists. Scientific materialism is the philosophy that works to explain all reality in terms of natural, physical processes. By contrast, the idea that materialism is the metaphysics which claims nothing exists but matter-in-motion is the philosophy of the ancient Greek atomists such as Democritus and Epicurus.
One plausible version of modern materialism is one the philosophy that holds everything real to be ultimately explained from a physical base. For example, the living entities of biology and the thinking entities of psychology, sociology, and culture are entities that can be explained as arising from a physical base. Calling such phenomena mere matter-in-motion amounts to a caricature of that level of reality. On the other hand, the materialist claim that ultimately each of these has a physical base is a viable form of realism and far removed from the simplistic notion that only matter-in-motion is real.
It would be a gross distortion to claim that the sub-atomic reality studied by quantum physics and the atomic reality studied by atomic and nuclear physics is a study of matter-in-motion, as the sub-atomic particle-waves and the atoms are the basis for matter. It would be a gross distortion to say that electro-magnetic band, which includes visible light, radio waves, ultra-violet waves and other forms of energy, is just matter-in-motion. No knowledgeable scientific materialist would ever claim that such physical realities as electrical and magnetic energy are nothing but matter-in-motion.
To claim that the realities of living organisms, of beings with a complex central nervous system, and of persons with culture (language, science, art, mathematics) are nothing but matter-in-motion is to commit a gross reductionism, one which scientific realists (materialists) do not commit. To say that all living organism have a physical-chemical basis is not to say that the reality of living organisms is nothing but the sub-atomic particles, the atoms, and molecules which make up that living organism. Likewise to say that all beings with a complex central nervous system and those with complex, large brains have a physical-chemical basis is not to say that the reality of such beings reduces to a set of sub-atomic particles, atoms, and molecules which make up those beings. In short, the complexity of existence at the biological and psychological levels is not reducible to mere matter-in-motion.
DETERMINISM: The claim that all materialists must accept the truth of determinism is a false claim.
Universal determinism is a metaphysical philosophy that is not held by many scientific materialists. There is no compelling reason for holding that all physical reality is held together by a universal net of causal determinism. This view of a universal determinism is an old metaphysical philosophy that modern scientific thinkers have mostly abandoned because a number of factors that question that universal determinism; e.g., the indeterminism of quantum physics, the randomness that is found in physical and social reality, the chaotic aspects of much of physical reality and the complexity the characterizes much of physical reality, making claims of causal determinism to be claims of academic philosophy at best.
The fact that many of the sciences utilize a from of causal explanation, i.e., explain phenomena in terms of the conditions and processes that caused the phenomenon in question, does not imply that those sciences entail a metaphysics of universal determinism. When we consider human reality (action, behavior) at the cultural-sociological-historical level, claims of universal determinism governing human behavior are not at all tenable, since the ability to predict human behavior is very limited at best.
FREEDOM (sometimes called "free will"): The statement that a materialist philosophy implies the impossibility of free, independent action by human beings is a false statement.
The belief that materialism negates the possibility of free, purposive, and autonomous human behavior is a belief that rests on a particular, philosophical notion of 'freedom,' one which identifies free action with free will, and sees freedom and free will as being independent of all conditioning factors. Accordingly, if human behavior can be causally explained as arising from neurological factors, psychological conditioning, and such, it is held that such behavior is not free behavior. Only action that would take place in absolute independence of any determining factor would be considered free action or action indicative of free will.
There are good reasons for rejecting that notion of 'freedom,' which turns out to be a concept of metaphysical freedom held by many traditional philosophers, but one which has nothing to do with our ordinary, effective concept of freedom. A rough statement of our ordinary, effective notion of freedom is that one acts freely when one acts in accordance with one's desires and self-interest. In other words, one is not coerced or compelled to act by some determining force, external or internal. A modern materialist does not have any trouble accounting for the fact that humans make 'free' choices and rational decisions which are not just the outcome of factors beyond their control.
Even if one accepts some version of metaphysical determinism (and there are many reasons for rejecting such), many philosophers have developed views of human 'freedom' which are compatible with determinism. In other words, it does not follow that if one accepts determinism, the implication is one that denies human free, 'independent' action.
